As such, the only way to be rid of a vetala is to repel it with certain mantras or send it to the Netherworld by performing its funeral rites. The vetala will commonly haunt cemeteries where it will sometimes use demonic powers to take possession of corpses and attack humans to make its anger known. If a vetala is caused too much displeasure, it can drive people mad, cause miscarriages or kill children with its demonic powers. However they are also known to guard the villages where they reside as long as it is not caused too much grief. Because the vetala live between worlds and thus outside the laws of time, they also posses great knowledge of the past, present and future as well as a deep insight into the nature of humans. Because of this, they are often hunted by sorcerers who wish to capture and enslave them.
